Over 10 years ago founder and executive director Cathy Schmidt founded Chesapeake Therapeutic
Riding (CTR) Inc. Currently CTR has 5 therapy horses and the support of approximately 70 trained
volunteers and staff. Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding provides horseback riding lessons and horse
related activities to individuals with special needs in Harford County. The organization works with clients from local nonprofit organizations to provide experiences with horses, including students from the Maryland School for the Blind. The program focuses on improving, balance, strength, coordination and self-esteem to the individuals that participate.
CTR is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International.
PATH International is a federally-registered 501(c3) nonprofit, was formed in 1969 as the North
American Riding for the Handicapped Association to promote equine-assisted activities and therapies
(EAAT) for individuals with special needs.
CTR is looking for a more consistent instructor position(s) in the form of Instructor Internships. This
position will give the intern hands on experience in the arena, working directly with riders and learning
the nuances of working with children and adults with special needs in connection with horses. Interns
will also learn basic horse care, adaptive equipment use and record keeping through progress notes.
CTR creates a nonjudgmental and safe environment in which to learn. The teaching style is best
described a collaborative and coaching oriented. Interns will be expected to contribute to the overall
betterment of CTR’s program offering.
Interns will have opportunity to attend instructor-oriented workshops at no cost in order to enhance
their experience as instructors. CTR will conduct a special orientation for University of Delaware
students interested in becoming interns at CTR. We encourage group participation as a team effort can
be most effective when learning. The date of the special orientation will be determined based on the
availability of the interns.
The intern will be expected to be available before, during and after lessons in approximate four hour
blocks of time. Times are on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 8:30, Wednesdays (special groups)
from 5:30 to 8:30 and Saturdays from 9:30 to 1:30. Additional clients may be added during the day as
needs arise. Advance notice will be given. CTR operates year round and requires interns to commit to
the lesson schedule on a per session basis to best accommodate the riders. The session calendar will be provided.
Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding Center is currently located at Harford Valley Farm, Fallston, MD.
However, they will soon be moving to county land at Oakington in Havre de Grace, MD by Fall 2014.
Their new and permanent location will feature state of the art facilities, 40 acres on which to grow and

The New Castle County (NCC) Mounted Patrol Unit owns and utilizes 10 draft and draft-cross horses
for police work. The unit and horses are based at the Carousel Park Equestrian Center, located
approximately 20 minutes north of the University of Delaware. The NCC Mounted Patrol Unit has
purchased two Clydesdale colts with the intention of training them to be future police mounts. Your
internship will be primarily focused on the daily care, maintenance and training of these newly acquired
colts. Through this internship, you will learn and improve upon a variety of general horsemanship skills
as well as skills that are more specific to that of the mounted patrol unit. The newly acquired Clydesdale
colts have arrived with no training and are seven months old at the time of this posting. You will work in conjunction with other members of the unit to provide general ground training and desensitization.
Your responsibilities may also include barn management such as feeding, grooming, tacking horses,
bathing and mucking stalls. There is the possibility for a candidate with experience in horsemanship and riding to ride horses that have already completed their police training. This will be determined during
the internship period.
The projected work schedule is generally Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., however some weekend hours may be required during special events. You will also maintain a daily log for each of the foals, and will work with other members of Law Enforcement as well as civilian employees. The mounted unit will be on the grounds of Carousel Park until the end of March. This is a 4-6 week unpaid internship depending on your start date.
The Carousel Park Equestrian Center is situated on 216 acres with well-groomed riding trails, ponds and a cross country course. The center is equipped with an indoor and outdoor riding ring for all weather

The Agricultural Sciences Professional Internship Program is designed to provide qualified college students with the opportunity for hands-on work experience in the unique growing areas that are part of Living with The Land, an agricultural attraction at Epcot®.
Responsibilities:
In addition to maintaining the show quality of our growing areas, aquaculture systems or biotechnology lab, interns will spend a significant amount of time leading informative and interactive guest tours through our facilities along with promoting and selling these tours. Additional training sessions, classes and meetings will be scheduled throughout the semester. Other duties vary by discipline:
Aquaculture:
Operate a recirculating freshwater aquaculture facility. Monitor filtration systems and water quality, assist in diagnosis and control of disease, and raise fish to marketable size for Walt Disney World® restaurants.
Biotechnology:
Maintain a tissue culture production facility. Prepare media and culture a wide variety of plants. Then, collect, package and deliver the tissue-cultured plants to Epcot® merchandise locations.
Entomology:
Become an integral part of The Land’s Integrated Pest Management program. Rear and maintain insect colonies, release beneficial insects into greenhouse crops, and maintain entomology-related shows.
Plant Science:
Maintain a high-quality show of hydroponically-grown food crops from around the globe. Seed, transplant, irrigate and prune plants; harvest produce for Epcot® restaurants; rake, sweep, and provide general cleanup of greenhouses.

The U.S. National Commission is currently accepting applications for the Laura Bush Travelling Fellowship. The Fellowship is intended to help fund a proposal designed by a student to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO - using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations.

To qualify, each applicant must:
- Be a college junior or senior the upcoming (award) year at a U.S. institution
- Be enrolled as a full time student
- Be pursuing a poultry or related agricultural degree: Food science, Poultry Science, Ag. Econ., International Agriculture, Food Marketing, etc.
- Provide his or her current official transcript
- Provide a letter of recommendation from his or her Dean

- Provide a one-page letter describing his or her goals and aspirations
