Hello from Walt Disney World in Orlando!  The Agricultural Sciences team is looking for undergraduate college students and recent graduates who have received their Bachelors degree within 6 months of our internships’ start dates to participate in our fun and challenging six-month hands-on internship in several different agricultural and science education fields including Plant Science, Entomology, Biotechnology, Aquaculture.  

We are currently looking for students to fill internships for the Fall 2014 term (June 2014 – January 2015).  The deadline to apply will be in early March, but please encourage students to apply as soon as possible to get the process started. 

Desired majors include but are not limited to:  Ag. Communication, Ag. Education, Agribusiness, Agriculture, Agronomy, Aquaculture, Aquatic Biology, Biology, Biotechnology, Botany, Crop Science, Biological and Biosystems/Agricultural Engineering, Entomology, Environmental Horticulture, Fisheries, Food Science, Horticulture, Landscape Design, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Ornamental Horticulture, and Plant Science.

The Agricultural Sciences Professional Internship Program is designed to provide qualified college students with the opportunity for hands-on work experience in the unique growing areas that are part of Living with The Land, an agricultural attraction at Epcot®.

Responsibilities:

In addition to maintaining the show quality of our growing areas, aquaculture systems or biotechnology lab, interns will spend a significant amount of time leading informative and interactive guest tours through our facilities along with promoting and selling these tours. Additional training sessions, classes and meetings will be scheduled throughout the semester. Other duties vary by discipline:

Aquaculture:

Operate a recirculating freshwater aquaculture facility. Monitor filtration systems and water quality, assist in diagnosis and control of disease, and raise fish to marketable size for Walt Disney World® restaurants.

Biotechnology:

Maintain a tissue culture production facility. Prepare media and culture a wide variety of plants. Then, collect, package and deliver the tissue-cultured plants to Epcot® merchandise locations.

Entomology:

Become an integral part of The Land’s Integrated Pest Management program. Rear and maintain insect colonies, release beneficial insects into greenhouse crops, and maintain entomology-related shows.

Plant Science:

Maintain a high-quality show of hydroponically-grown food crops from around the globe. Seed, transplant, irrigate and prune plants; harvest produce for Epcot® restaurants; rake, sweep, and provide general cleanup of greenhouses.

Laura Bush Travelling Fellowship

Laura Bush Travelling Fellowship  

The U.S. National Commission is currently accepting applications for the Laura Bush Travelling Fellowship.  The Fellowship is intended to help fund a proposal designed by a student to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO - using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. 

The fellowship open to US citizens (ages 18-25) enrolled in a college or university who express an interest in international collaboration but have not had many opportunities to travel abroad. The application deadline is Monday, February 24, 2014.

Dow AgroSciences Internship Opportunities

Dow AgroSciences has positions available for students seeking 

summer internship opportunities. These opportunities are 

full-time positions available from May until August.

Applicable majors would include:
•Any agriculture-related majors
•Biology (biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, entomology, microbiology, molecular biology, plant pathology, or plant physiology)
•Chemistry (analytical, organic, or physical)
•Informatics (bioinformatics or chemical)

R&D opportunities include

 both laboratory-based and field station research positions. Positions for R&D field station research are located throughout the US whereas the laboratory-based R&D positions are located at our headquarters in Indianapolis, IN.

Job Descriptions
Research and Development: The R&D intern program provides an opportunity for students to work closely with a senior scientist in order to improve technical skills while being given a developmental opportunity in an industrial setting. It is desirable that the intern have past practical experience in handling chemicals, operating laboratory equipment, generating and manipulating data, as well as computer database and word-processing skills. Interns are encouraged to be creative and take initiative, where appropriate, and will be granted significant latitude for discretionary decisions and independence of action within guidelines established by their supervisor. Interns are expected to always operate in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualified interns should be pursuing a BS or MS degree in biology, chemistry, informatics, or closely related majors. 

Students having completed at least their junior year are preferred. A chemistry intern candidate having a working knowledge of organic synthesis and/or experience with modern chromatographic techniques is highly desirable.

For a biology intern, it would be advantageous to have a working knowledge of their area of study. Interns will be part of a team responsible for the development of novel agricultural products. Good interpersonal, communication, organizational, teamwork and time management skills are essential.

Primary responsibilities:
•       Review and research project background and status with mentor
•       Become proficient in laboratory and/or greenhouse experiments or biochemical assays to characterize experimental, developmental, and commercial herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and products of biotechnology
•       Participate in all phases of research including planning, preparation, calibration, application, evaluation, data analysis, maintenance, and when necessary, appropriate disposal.
•       Design and conduct experiments, with mentorship guidance, within a defined project
•       Make novel observations
•       Collect and interpret data
•       Draw sound scientific conclusions based on data analysis. The results of these studies, and the conclusions generated, will impact research plans and advancement decisions on the experimental materials.
•       Present project reviews before colleagues and peers
